According to national studies, households that receive weatherization services can expect heating costs to be reduced 20 to 25 percent. At today’s fuel cost, that amounts to about a $300 savings. As fuel costs continue to rise, even greater savings will result.
 
According to national studies, households that receive weatherization services can expect heating costs to be reduced 20 to 25 percent. At today’s fuel cost, that amounts to about a $300 savings. As fuel costs continue to rise, even greater savings will result.

There are may way you can save on your energy bills just by doing things a little differently.

When you are cooking...

  • Set a clock timer so you know when to check on food and remove it.
  • Preheat the oven only for cakes and pastries.
  • Turn the oven off 10 minutes before the food is done. It will be hot enough to finish cooking.
  • Do not use the oven to heat your home!

When you have a refrigerator...

  • Keep the freezer at least half-full, even if you add milk cartons filled with water
  • Defrost when frost is 1/4 inch thick.
  • Open and close the door quickly.
  • Keep motor and coils clean.
  • Set it to cool at about 40 degrees, set freezer at 0 degrees (or medium settings).
  • Inspect for worn, cracked, misfitting or food soiled gaskets.
  • Allow hot dishes to partially cool before refrigerating.

When you have a dishwasher...

  • Scrape and rinse with cold water before loading.
  • Load it properly, but do not overload.
  • Be sure it is full when you turn it on.
  • Air dry dishes after wash cycle is completed.

When you have a washing machine...

  • Wash clothes in warm or cold water, rinse in cold water.
  • Wash only full loads, or adjust water level to size of load.
  • Pre-soak or use a spot treatment for heavily soiled garments.

When you have a dryer...

  • Be sure dryer is vented outside, no into an attic or crawlspace.
  • Clean the lint trap after every use.
  • Don't overload dryer.

  • Close shades and curtains at night.
  • Hang up shades, heavy curtains or even plastic on interior.
  • Lock your windows tightly to clos-up the space between the window sashes.
  • Close all storm windows.
  • Tighten the door hinges so that the door fits tight.
  • Open and close the door quickly and the least amount of times possible.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filter every month during the heating season
  • Have a qualified service person do an annual furnace tune-up.
  • Set back the thermostat at night or when leaving for at least 3 hours (not below 55 degrees).
  • Close off unoccupied room and shut the heat registers.
